Methods and systems of logging detected protection system related events affecting a protection system are disclosed. A determination is made as to whether a detected event itself or in combination with a previous detected event provides information relating to both a protection switching operation and a cause of the protection switching operation, and if so, a further determination is made as to whether the information relating to a protection switching operation indicates that the protection switching operation has occurred. If both of these conditions are satisfied, a log entry associated with the protection switching operation, or possibly an alarm for the protection switching operation, is recorded in an event log. In one embodiment, an event log entry is created for a detected protection switching operation and then updated to include information related to a subsequently detected event associated with the protection switching operation.

Method and apparatus for documenting network paths

Methods and apparatus for documenting network path connectivity are described that allow a network management system/revision management system (NMS/RMS) to determine what equipment and ports support a network path by interrupting and restoring Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) service on the network path. Upon detecting a loss of PoE service, communication active jacks that support network path connectivity may activate an internal switch that interrupts downstream connectivity. Each communication active jack along the network path may then begin broadcasting a unique message in the upstream direction that is addressed to the NMS/RMS. Upon receiving a unique active jack message, the NMS/RMS may record the information contained within and instruct the communication active jack to reestablish connectivity to the next downstream device. In this manner, as each device along a network path regains connectivity the network path information stored within the NMS/RMS is updated until a complete view of the network path is documented.

A system and method for processing information transport elements, such as ethernet packets, at interfaces to a forwarder. Modules that implement processing logic are allocated per interface and per direction (i.e., inbound or outbound). At any given interface, a series of modules would be used to process inbound packets; likewise, a set of modules would be used to process outbound packets. For inbound packets, the modules allocated for inbound processing are executed when the packet is received from the interface, before sending the packet on to the forwarder. For packets that are outbound from the forwarder, the modules allocated for outbound processing are applied when the packet is sent by the forwarder, prior to any other processing, e.g., queuing to hardware. To assign modules to different interfaces at a forwarder, a registration process is performed during the system start-up process, or dynamically at runtime. For any given interface and direction, modules can be prioritized, so that a packet is processed sequentially in a specific order, one module after the other.

By continuously adapting the data routes when a congested route is encountered, the data can reach its destination via alternate routes around the congested area. This is accomplished in a distributed manner where each node provides an alternative path to congestion based on its local knowledge and/or knowledge obtained from neighboring nodes. This allows the data path to be dynamically adjusted for congestion without requiring a centralized body of control. In another instance, data rate changes can be combined with data path changes to increase the efficiency of the data throughput. Alternative routes can be determined based upon the costs associated with selecting that route. Selecting a minimum cost route yields the most efficient transfer of data.

Method of adding stages to a scalable switching network

Extra stages can be added to a switching network to provide pathwise redundancy for fault tolerance and to alleviate traffic blocking. Also, the addition of extra stages can alleviate the loss of pathwise redundancy when the width of switching networks is increased. An in-service method of upgrading a switching network by adding stages allows the addition of redundancy to an existing network without the need to take the network out of service. From an operational point of view, it is often desirable for the upgrade process to be performed by a plurality of sequential steps. However, it is also desirable to minimize the number of steps performed. Because the insertion of extra stages into an existing network calls. for the rewiring of interconnection networks above and below the insertion point, the number of steps can be minimized while also minimizing the impact to network traffic by concurrently rewiring those interconnection networks through a plurality of disconnection and connection steps.

A chunk format for a large-scale, high data throughput router includes a preamble that allows each individual chunk to have clock and data recovery performed before the chunk data is retrieved. The format includes a chunk header that contains information specific to the entire chunk. A chunk according to the present format can contain multiple packet segments, with each segment having its own packet header for packet-specific information. The format provides for a scrambler seed which allows scrambling the data to achieve a favorable zero and one balance as well as minimal run lengths. There are forward error correction (FEC) bytes as well as a chunk cyclical redundancy check (CRC) to detect and/or correct any errors and also to insure a high degree of data and control integrity. Advantageously, a framing symbol inserted into the chunk format itself allows the receiving circuitry to identify or locate a particular chunk format. “Break Bytes” and “Make Bytes” fields located at the beginning of a chunk preamble precondition an optical receiver to a proper state before the actual chunk arrives at the receiver.

Technique for providing dynamic modification of application specific policies in a feedback-based, adaptive data network

A feedback-based adaptive network is described wherein at least a portion of the network elements report operating information relating to network conditions to a centralized data store. The information which is reported to the data store is analyzed by a policy engine which includes a plurality of application specific plug-in policies for analyzing selected information from the data store and for computing updated control information based upon the analysis of the information. The updated control information is fed back to selected network elements to thereby affect operation of the selected elements. Typically, when the operation of a network element has been affected, its corresponding operating information will change. The new or changed network element operating information is then reported to the data store and analyzed by the policy engine. The policy engine may then generate new or updated control information for affecting the operation of selected elements in the network. In this way, the dynamic and automatic feedback control of network elements is provided in order to allow the network to adapt to changing conditions. Events relating to changing conditions in the network may be reported to selected elements in the network using an event notification service. Additionally the adaptive, feedback-based network of the present invention may include a network quality monitoring system for evaluating performance characteristics or other aspects of the network based upon predetermined standards or criteria. If it is determined that a particular characteristic of the network does not conform with the standards established for that characteristic, the policy which controls that particular characteristic of the network may be automatically and dynamically modified to thereby affect the network performance.

A system and method for streaming sequential data through a vehicle switch fabric network. This is particular useful in areas such as reprogramming nodes in the automotive switch fabric network where relatively large records or messages need to be transmitted through the switch fabric, although the invention may be used in other areas. In sum, the system and method described herein takes large data records and breaks them down into smaller units (data packets) that fit within the constraints of the physical layer on which communication links in the switch fabric network is built. The smaller data packets are assigned with a message identification and a sequence number. Data packets associated with the same data record or message are assigned with the same message identification but may differ in their sequence number. Each data packet is transmitted over the vehicle switch fabric network to a destination node. At the destination node, the data packets may be reassembled to its original data format based on the message identification and sequence numbers. The reassembled message may then be presented to an application in the node for processing.

The present invention provides an efficient data transmission method in BLUETOOTH broadcasting. The method of BLUETOOTH broadcasting generates a first broadcast packet and determines whether a slot is included in an access window. In a case where the slot is not included in the access window, a service interface (SI) information value is set to the assignment information of the slot. The first broadcast packet is then transmitted. A second broadcast packet is then generated and it is determined whether a slot is included in the access window. If the slot is not included in the access window, the SI information value is set to zero. The second broadcast packet is then transmitted. A slave receives the broadcast packets and obtains the SI information values. It is then determined whether the slave transmits data at the next odd numbered slot.

Techniques and technologies are provided for restarting a first wireless switch when the first wireless switch fails. For example, after the first wireless switch fails, the first wireless switch transmits a restart message to its peer wireless switches to begin re-establishing peering sessions with peer wireless switches. The first wireless switch resets its home wireless client database (HWCDb) with information from its data plane wireless client database (KWCDb), and transmits the updated information in its HWCDb to its peer wireless switches. The peer wireless switches store this information in their respective control plane wireless client databases (CPWCDbs), and initially mark the wireless client devices in the respective CPWCDbs as stale entries. Each of the wireless switches then exchanges information from their respective HWCDbs with the first wireless switch (and other peer wireless switches) so that each wireless switch eventually has a wireless client database (WCDb) comprising each of the wireless client devices in the mobility domain.

While a remote station is in the improved Control-Hold Mode, the circuitry that monitors the forward packet data channels and the associated control channels are turned off. Since the forward packet data channels and their associated control channels are not monitored, the operations of the reverse channels can be gated off to predetermined duty cycles, or set on intermittent transmission modes, or shut down completely. Transitions from the Control-Hold Mode to the Active Mode can be initiated by the remote station or by a base station.
Arrangement for reducing application execution based on a determined lack of flow control credits for a network channel

An InfiniBand™ network node includes a network interface, a system memory, a memory controller configured for controlling access to the system memory, and a processor. The network interface is configured for outputting data packets according to a prescribed flow control protocol that specifies flow control resources. The network interface also is configured for outputting a data flow interruption request to the memory controller based on a determined depletion of the flow control resources. The memory controller, in response to reception of the data flow interruption request, restricts access to the system memory. Hence, the processor, in response to detecting the restricted access to the system memory, reduces execution of a prescribed application resource based on the determined depletion of the flow control resources. Hence, the supply of data for the data packets is reduced based on the reduced execution of the prescribed application resource, enabling flow control protocols to be maintained while preserving processor and memory resources for other application resources.

As a result, the apparent quality of the uplink channel in those cells will appear to be lower than the actual quality of that channel. The power control commands issued from the base station to the user device will, therefore, reflect this lower estimated channel quality and, as a result, the user device will follow power control commands from the base station in the HSDPA cell. Therefore, the transmit power of the user device will remain adequate to communicate with the base station in the HSDPA cell and, as a result, the UL and DL in the HSDPA cell will remain synchronized.

The protection mechanism determines the distance associated with wireless links of the heterogeneous networks and verifies that the distance is within the predefined proximity limits. The distance may be measured by evaluating the signal strength of received signals. The protection mechanism further uses round trip time determinations to enforce the proximity limits on wired or unknown segments of the heterogeneous network. Specifically, the round trip time associated with a wired or unknown segment may be determined using the round trip time associated with the wireless segments and the total round trip time of the network as a whole. The round trip time of the wired or unknown segment is then compared to a round trip time limit associated with the proximity requirement for distributing content.

Queuing functionality is made possible in a system which employs a switch which does not support queuing. The queuing functionality is made possible by a queue means which is provided within an application means, i.e. the voicemail means itself. Consequently, the switch itself is relieved of the burden of having to keep track of the exact status of each of its ports at all times. The high-level queuing is performed at a logical level rather than at the physical level, and therefore affords a cleaner interface. Furthermore, the implementation of the queuing functions in the terminating application means allows for the use of a wider variety of intermediate switch means in a network.
